Journey
Gerald Muwonge was born in Uganda to John Bukenya and the late Rosemary Nalujja. He also lived for a time with his cousin, Jose Chameleone’s parents, Gerald Mayanja and Proscovia Musoke, who influenced his artistic upbringing. From a young age, he attended various schools in and around Kampala, ultimately dropping out in senior three after losing family belongings in a fire.
Clever J launched his music journey in the mid‑1990s as a producer and composer, working at Leone Island Records, his cousin Chameleone’s label. His early tracks included “Yewuwo,” “Sirina Mulala,” and “Obusungu”. His breakthrough came between 2006 and 2007 with the hypnotic Afrobeat/dancehall hit “Manzi Wanani,” which resonated deeply across Uganda and made him a household name. He followed with a full album of the same name, blending Swahili and Luganda lyrics, and later released "Ensi Yaleta" along with several other singles.
Rooted firmly in Afrobeat and dancehall, Clever J is known for his hoarse, expressive voice and rhythmic, bass-heavy productions. His tracks often weave rich beats, whistles, and chorus harmonies evident in his signature hit “Manzi Wanani”.
After a period of success peaking between 2005 and 2008, Clever J faced a rapid downturn. He admitted to indulging in alcohol and other destructive habits, which led to financial struggles, failed concerts, and eventually selling his car and turning to brick-making in Buloba. He experienced a falling-out with the Mayanja family and legal troubles over a stolen studio computer, during which he wrote “Manzi Wanani” while serving time in Lira, inspired by a girlfriend’s visits.
Around 2020, he became a born-again Christian, began planning to launch a church, returned to music production, and even signed with Alien Skin’s management under Fangone Forest.
In August 2023, he staged a well-attended comeback concert titled “Return of Clever J” at Lugogo Cricket Oval/KCCA grounds, selling out and delighting fans with classics and new material. He also welcomed a previously unknown daughter after a reunion in Dubai.
Away from music, Clever J’s life has taken varied turns: he worked as a brickmaker and farmer, built a modest home in Buloba, and deepened his Christian faith as a born-again believer. He also nurtured a passion for sports, particularly soccer, with a fondness for Arsenal FC.
